About our guest … John Edmond is a native of West Las Vegas and a graduate of Las Vegas High School. He attended the University of Seattle, where he obtained his BAS in accounting in 1971. After working briefly in the accounting field, he was encouraged to attend dealer’s school. In 1972, he became the first African American to be employed as a baccarat dealer in the state of Nevada. In 1978, he conceived the idea of redeveloping a run-down retail center known as the Golden West Shopping Center, which he then purchased for $259,000. The Golden West Shopping Center was the largest shopping center built in 1964 in Southern Nevada. Mr. Edmond, with the assistance of key city officials, accomplished this ambitious undertaking, and completed the Nucleus Business Plaza. It was the largest piece of real estate owned by an African American in West Las Vegas; and he attracted several government offices to anchor the center. Later, he sold Nucleus Business Plaza for $6,800.000. In 2001, John Edmond, along with a group of investors, purchased the Westland Plaza property from the Magic Johnson Group. The 22.5-acre property was renamed Edmond Town Center and a 145,000 sq. ft. shopping center now flourishes there, hosting several national retailers. Mr. Edmond continues to be directly involved in the day-to-day operation of the Center, providing his commitment to continue to do business in, and support, his community.
