About our guest…PHYLLIS A. JAMES is a Harvard-educated lawyer and a champion for diversity and inclusion, who has been a trailblazer throughout her career. She has worked in the private sector, where she was the first African American to achieve partnership as well as in corporate law. She served as Chief Lawyer for the City of Detroit ( Corporation/General Counsel) for two terms. She then moved on to being both lead inside litigation counsel and Chief Diversity & Inclusion (“CDI”)/CSR Officer for more than a decade at MGM Resorts International – where for many years she was the highest-ranking African American gaming industry executive on the Las Vegas Strip. As MGM’s CDI/CSR Officer she focused on building 21st century inclusive and responsible cultures, leadership practices and operational systems. After a distinguished private-sector career, Phyllis founded the 501(c)(3) non-profit Foundation for Women’s Leadership & Empowerment (FWLE) (with MGM support) in 2019, where she is dedicated to educating women in the core competencies for leadership roles across society. During her career she has achieved many recognitions for her legal accomplishments and community contributions.
